The Extended battery will over triple the battery life but will also double the thickness of your UX and perhaps reduce the cool factor slightly. For people who are heavy WiFi/Bluetooth or just processor intensive the extra battery life is a great addition. The battery can either be stored on or off the UX. If you keep it on all the time the external battery will drain completely before the internal battery is used. If you add the external battery after draining the internal battery it will slowly trickle charge the internal battery. With this being known you don’t need to keep the extended battery on the UX all the time. As an example if you are on a business trip where you won’t carry your charger or won’t be near AC outlets you could take along the extended battery and place the UX on it every night before you go to bed and have the extended battery recharge the UX without the power brick/charger. The general agreement seems to be that the external battery is one of the best add-ons you can possibly get from your UX. It isn’t made of magnesium-alloy like your UX but the extra battery life is great for heavy users of their handhelds. |

| Here is a link to a case thread on the ClieSource Forums: ClieSource Forum UX50 Case Thread. This is a rapidly evolving area for the UX at this time and until we have a solid list for the FAQ this thread is your best bet. | ||
| I found an inexpensive case on eBay - it was interesting in that it allowed the UX50 to charge whilst in the case via a USB cable such as the Belkin Palm car charger which has a 12v car socket with a USB connector, plus a dual-headed cable with power and USB sync for some Palm somethingorother - the mini USB socket (as with any mini USB socket) gets power into the case and therefore the Clie without having to unclip the leather wallet. Other than that it is quite a cheap case, with two slots for memory sticks, a simple 'fold' construction and a magnetic latch. It doesn't protect the sides, so sometimes your memory stick will pop out. They were selling in the UK for £9.99. | ||
| I just got my vaja case, loved it, check it out by yourself http://www1.vajacases.com/images/pda/sony/ux_series/ux_series.html I ordered the blue one though they have lots colors to choose from. The logo is kinda old on the pic, i have a small silver "v" shape logo on it... | ||

There are a couple different screen protectors available for the UX series of handhelds. The two primary types are the adhesive and non-adhesive types. The adhesive types are held on by using a sticky layer on the bottom side of the protector, which goes against your screen. Some of these are prone to trapping air bubbles or being applied in such a way that they must be removed and reapplied before they are straight and free of bubbles. The non-adhesive type of screen protectors are either held on by static, a small sticky pad right in the middle of the screen protector (rather than covering the entire surface) or by being slightly larger than the screen so they can be slid under the frame of the PDA. Depending on the brand most screen protectors come in packs of one or three. Just because you are getting more protectors does not necessarily mean you are getting a good deal. Brands such as Brando only come with one protector but they expect that one to last the life of your PDA. Quality is important. Things to consider when purchasing screen protectors is how you like your screen to feel. Do you like it to be slightly tacky so when writing on the screen it feels like you are writing on paper or do you prefer a glass-like surface? Also, what clarity-loss are you willing to tolerate and do you want your screen protector to be anti-reflective (the last two tend to be a trade off)? Here is a list of currently available UX40/UX50 Screen Protectors: Martin Fields Overlay Plus - Sticks using Static (no adhesive). Smooth Surface. Very Clear. Brando Screen Protector - Paper-like feel. Anti-reflective. Slightly sticky pad on back used to hold protector in place. Reported to be highly scratch resistant. JavoScreen - Non-Adhesive Protector. Anti-reflective. This thread on Cliesource discusses screen protectors for the UX series. |
Fellowes has now started making screen protectors for the UX40/UX50. They are available at retail outlets such as Bestbuy/CompUSA etc.. If these are like their previous screen protectors they are the highly-sticky type and come in packs of 3-5. Sony also has their own screen protector for the UX40/UX50 with the model number PEGA-SP40. The reviews on this particular screen protector model have been mixed to date. |
| Air Bubbles will commonly dissipate over a period of days and might not need to be removed by hand. If you do need to remove the air bubbles with some screen protectors you can use a credit card to slide across the screen and push the air bubbles out. If you need to reapply the screen protector in order to remove the air bubbles then on the reapplication use the edge of a credit card to slide along the back of the screen protector as you lay it down onto the screen. This should assist in assuring an even application and reduce the number of air bubbles being created. | ||

| This is always up for debate but here are some items to consider: Screen Protectors - ~$20US Extended Battery - ~$120US Reasonable Storage Device/Case - Highly Variable Price |

PEGA-VR100K is a device that records from a TV cable input directly to
a MemoryStick. It saves TV programs or movies in a format designed for
playback on the UX (and other Clies). It works basically like a VCR
(with time settings and all) that records to a MemoryStickrather than a
tape. The PEGA-VR100K does not circumvent copy-protection. You cannot record DVDs directly to MemoryStick using this device (not out of the box, anyway -- there are possible work-arounds). In order to make use of the PEGA-VR100K you will need to have a large MemoryStick -- ideally 500 megs or 1 gig. Smaller cards will fill up quickly. Quality of the recorded video is very good if viewed on the UX. It's not DVD quality, but it's plenty good enough for watching television programs or recorded movies on the road. Whether you get one is up to you, but there are some things to consider. First, at $300 list price it's expensive. Second the additional memory stick to make optimal use of this device will cost between $200 and $400 more. Finally, if you really want to be on the cutting edge, Sony has just introduced a device that incorporates the features of a Playstation 2, a DVD recorder, a TiVo and has a MemoryStick port for transfering recorded programming. The device is called the PlaystationX or PSX, and won't be here until after x-mas, but it's really amazing. The downside is that it'll cost $800. |

Any external IR keyboard with PalmOS 5 drivers should function with the UX40/UX50. A thing to know about external keyboards is that you should disable the driver (and your infrared receive if it is not automatically disabled) after using the keyboard so it does not continue to drain power from your handheld. Just like with any accessory evaluate what is important to you and choose the proper keyboard for your needs. The current compatible keyboards on the market in common distribution are the following: Belkin IR Keyboard Targus IR Keyboard |
| I have a Ux-50 and am a total newbie to this whole computer stuff, Im just a gadget guy and am now realizing the depths that I can go if I new how to, with my clie. When you say turn off the driver to not drain the battery are you talking about on the clie or on the keyboard? | ||
| In response to the question by Doug - we mean on the Clie. There is a driver you install to your Clie to support the keyboard. It can usually be toggled on and off via a utility included with the keyboard. It will save battery life to turn off the keyboard driver when not in use. | ||
| The best thing to do is use something soft, like a business card, to gently peel up the corner of a screen protector. If that doesn't work, you may want to use a fingernail (or a friend's fingernail if you're isn't long enough) or some soft plastic object. Try to avoid something as hard as a credit card because of the sharp edges. | ||
| I use either a leftover screen that I fold into a mini tri-corn. I carefully lift the screen protector by lifting up one of the edges with one of the corners of the tri-corn. If I don't have a leftover screen, I use the residual plastic that the new sticky screen was removed from. | ||

| JookWarrior has found a car mount that works with the UX series handhelds. Refer to his post over at ClieSource for more information. | ||

| This is not a definitive answer - I'm looking to get a ux50, and also need to use it for various terminal stuff though, so this us what I'm looking at gettings. Firstly a USB->rs232 adaptor, available widely, I still need to check the support under palmos for them though. Then either you'll want a serial lead with DB9 on one end and Rj45 on the other (these are supplied in various configurations when you buy ciscos, or you can get pinouts from the docs to make your own), or what I'll be doing, which is a normal DB9->DB9 serial cable, plus an adaptor for the end which converts DB9 to RJ45. This is an upgrade from a psion 5mx for me, so my kit already includes a db9->rj45 adaptor, a db9->db9 null modem adaptor (as the psion comes with a serial cable itself, but it's null modem, so needs another null modem adaptor on it when it's being used as a normal serial cable) | ||

didn't change any settings on the S56, you could probably restore the
factory settings on it to make sure they are the same but I don't know
what all is reset by doing such so you may want to research that if
concerned about your contacts or other phone data..
The pref settings that I think will be relevent on the UX50 are:

| Most important question! There are two ways to connect: 1) Wi-Fi and 2)using bluetooth and your cell phone. In either case, your need to download Mobile Manager software that is available at: http://ciscdb.sel.sony.com/cgi-bin/swu-install.pl?upd_id=1472&PASSVAL2=SMB (it is called mobile connection wizard) Instructions: 1) Install mobile wizard 2) Using mobile wizard (at your desktop PC computer) add all connections that you want, such as 2a) T-mobile hotspots - this is available in Starbucks, almost everywhere. If you have Clie, you can get 30-day trial, and if you are bold, you can almost always get this trial. Or you can pay (10 USD/day, 40 USD/month, 30/month with contract). Go to starbucks, use your little mobile manager at Clie desktop and connect! 2b) At your desktop PC, add bluetooth connection for your wireless carrier. Supported carriers with ultra-easy set-up are Cingular, AT&T, and T-Mobile . For others, you have to call customer support, request specialist (do not let first real person to try to help you) and have them help you fill the fields. Usually, you need some kind of extra payment for "data support" or "data connect" or " wireless internet" to enable this features. Perhaps my explanation is not so good - do not worry! This usergroup contains ALL the answers - I was using it while setting up my Clie UX-50 and succeeded (w/ Cingular). It is awesome - you get data rates between 20 and 50 kbps (South San Jose, CA at least). Wi-Fi is cool, but if you want to drink beer and surf, if will not work... ;-) | ||

| Yes - I have a bluetooth EMTAC receiver working superbly with my UX50 | ||
| Hey RikF, what navigation software do you use. I have found a Socket reciever/nav software package which is the same thing as EMTAC I belive, but I can only find information that says their MyNavigator software is for PocketPC only. It says something about Pharos and Mapropolis for Palm, what do you use? | ||
| You can use mapopolis software for it. www.mapopolis.com | ||
| Yes - I have a NavMan 4460 GPS and Smart ST v2 software. This is available for europe and america and works pretty well | ||
| I've used the DeLorme "Bluelogger" with great success for over two years now. It uses the "Street Atlas" software from DeLorme. Available here: http://delorme.com/bluelogger/ | ||
| Although TomTom does not officially support it, TomTom's Navigator 5 does work quite well with the UX50 using several different bluetooth GPS units. Highly recommended! | ||
| You need to go to downloads for the Sony Peg Ux 50 and download the connection manager program. Once it is on your computer, go thru the steps adding the information it requires. Hot sync. Then turn on the bluetooth on your phone and pda, where they're connected, go to net? (my sony is in for repairs) and press connect. It should dial your phone to the system your phone company uses for internet. If I am not clear, if you just download the program from the Sony Pegux50 site, and follow the directions of the connection manager, you are home free. | ||

| There is a truly evil problem regarding memory stick compatibility. I had the same Problem. If you like to use Sonicstage to copy the music some kind of DRM requires the memory-Stick to have "MagicGatte technology". Unfortunatelly, the ux50 is not compatible with some MagicGate !PRO! (yes its funny) Sticks, so the DRM does not work. Here is the workaround: Just copy your mp3 to the MSAUDIO Folder on your Memorystick and forget about Sonicstage. It will work fine. | ||
| I have some questions first... 1. Do you have a memory stick? If so...what size? 2. What format of songs are you using? 3. What software did you use to rip the songs off CD? Answer these and I'll help if I can!!! :) | ||
| see above. your memory stick is propably not compatible to the drm system. copy the mp3 to the MSAUDIO folder on your card. it will work. | ||

| Download CONNECTION MANAGER program from the CLie PEG UX 50 Upgrade site http://ciscdb.sel.sony.com/perl/select-software.pl download and install in your computer, hot sync. Make sure your phone has be set with the information it needs and you can find this on your phone manufacturers settings page. | ||

| I dont know what pda you have, but I have used several sony clie's and when I used the hard reset button it did'nt loose any data for any of them. (I think it would loose data if the battery ran out). | ||
| A hard-reset, as opposed to a soft-reset, will put the device into factory defaults. You'll loose everything. Pressing the reset button once, and quickly, is a soft-reset. They deliberately made it difficult to do a hard-reset, and you're even prompted for confirmation. I have no idea what PDA _doesn't_ loose data after a hard-reset, after all, that's the whole POINT of it all... | ||
| Yes it is. You need a Wireless LAN MS I/O card. It currently is around $46 which is better then before when it was $120. Goto www.hscus.com to learn more. It is also reported that the Wifi card has better range then the UX50 built-in WiFi. In order to mantain a good amount of time, it is recommended that you use a EB40 extended battery. Which you can find on ebay. | ||
| On my previous Clie I used the program Mocha PPP (downloadable), and made a connection using a virtual serial port in the Bluetooth protocol. Mocha PPP translates the PPP stack to the serial port, which is what you need to be able to surf the net. I hope you are willing to experiment a little on this frontier. Speed is not very high, but it'll get you by like an ordinary modem. | ||

| Not at this time. This has been a personal dream of mine since I purchased a UX50 but it is not an available feature right now. Your two choices for mounting the Internal Media or Memory Stick are using either Irda or the Sync Cable included with the unit. | ||
| I have downloaded the Total Commander and it does allow blue tooth mounting of UX50 which is very cool. | ||
| If you are willing to use third party utilities to get connectivity to your UX there is a plug-in for a utility called Total Commander that is supposed to allow mounting of media over Bluetooth. Here is a link to Total Commander's Website. Here is a link to the Serial Plug-In page required to mount media on the UX in Total Commander. Note that I haven't tried this utility so if you have problems please let us know. | ||
| Also, you can just use a program like VFSFTP+. I run ftp daemons on my computers and I can transfer any file to/from any computer using the wireless ethernet connection. There are other FTP clients for the PalmOS, but VFSFTP+ is very nice and the wireless connection is fast. | ||
| You can also use this app (3rd party app) http://www.envicon.com/SyncWizard/ . When this app is running and you perform a hotsync, it will take over the hot sync (Instead of the hotsync software you have installed on your computer) and make is so you can drag and drop to the MS, Internal Mem., or the cord mem. Cool bit of software | ||
| There is now a "magic" tool to do this. It is bluefiles from softick Check on http://www.softick.com/bluefiles/ It is an apps that you run on the UX. Then on the PC/Mac, you just open the Bluetooth neightborhood, and you can drag and drop files to and from Clie or its Memory Stick. No need to hotsync. I read some people use it to install SW too... | ||
| "Mounting"
a drive means that the UX's internal memory or a MemoryStick inside the
UX shows up on the PC as an external drive, allowing the user to move
files directly to the internal memory or MemoryStick. To mount the UX as a drive on a PC, simply connect the UX to the PC with the USB cable. On the UX, launch the program called "Data Import." Your UX's memory options should show up as an external drive. You can access these drives directly by going to My Computer. From there, you will be able to move files directly to the internal memory or MemoryStick just as you would an external harddrive. If you just move files to the card or internal memory however, your files may not be placed in the proper folder to be read by the UX. In order to make sure that your files are moved to the appropriate folder, the easiest thing to do is to mount the UX as described above and then launch Data Export on the PC. Drag and drop any files (pictures, MP3s, documents, etc) to the Data Export window, and the program will install them to the UX where you direct, but in the appropriate folder. |
| To use the UX-50 on computers without Sony's drivers you can also use Card Export II (http://www.softick.com/cardexport2/). This will mount the internal memory or memory stick as a USB-stick. | ||
| Apparently, the Audio Player isn't smart enough to index the .mp3 files in the MSAUDIO directory automatically. It relies on the PC application to do this for it and create a MP3LIST.M3U file in the same directory. You can work around this by copying the files in, then use the menus to go to Options->Transfer, then pick "Internal Media" or "Memory Stick", and press OK. Cancel the transfer and OK past all the warnings. All of your MP3s in the directory will now be in one playlist. | ||

The Clie PEG-UX40 and UX50 are handheld computers developed by Sony, which run the PalmOS 5 operating system. Some of their unique features include that they are small even by PDA standards, they support video and MP3 playback out of the box and they come with a easy to use thumb operated keyboard. The physical design is called a "clamshell" design. Think of it like a Notebook computer on a very small scale. The screen can also be rotated to be used in Tablet mode where the keyboard is not exposed at all. There is a camera included with the UX that can take pictures of resolutions up to 640x480, not good enough for documenting your family events but plenty good to take occasional snapshots and having fun. Both organizers comes with the a standard list of features including rechargable batteries, Irda ports, Bluetooth, voice recorder capability and 480x320 resolution screeens. The UX50 also has 802.11b wireless built-in enabling you to connect to the Internet and networks at wireless hotspots everywhere. Here are a couple of pictures (taken straight from the Sony website) of the UX50 so you can get an idea of what the organizer looks like: UX50 Open and Tablet Mode |

| The UX40 does not include 802.11b WiFi capabilities. Other than that they are the same device from a technology standpoint. | ||
| The UX50 will not work with a Macintosh out of the box, but will be able to work with purchase of MissingSync. | ||
| I feel this is very misleading information as the UX50 will work straight out of box first of all go to www.palmone.com and download palm desktop for macintosh in the support for macintosh section (hint lie about what model you have and pick equivalent Palm branded model) This should allow to sync most things with your ux50 most impressive is the bluetooth syncing. Secondly go to www.apple.com/isync/ and download isync palm conduit armed with these programs you should be able to set your ux50 with a mac the only advantage that missing sync software really has is abilty to mount memory sticks I would advise that you should buy a mem stick reader for 5 dollars off ebay www.ebay.com thanx | ||

| No, there are no differences, the only reason it's there is to allow Sony to follow where they are selling more units and where they are doing poorly. So, they can work on marketing, etc that way. | ||
| Sony use the serial numbers for identifying the country of purchase before giving support or allowing warrantee claims. e.g. Sony UK only honour warrantees for devices bought and registered in the EC. Sony do this for all their products, not just PDAs. | ||
| European UX are UX50 and the keyboard has accented caracters. | ||

I essentially am able to view whatever my ux50 views through my notebook via my wireless connection. Is it possible for it to work in the opposite direction. I.E. Using my ux50 to view a web cam connected to my laptop? By the way, Thanks for a great piece of code.

| The processor dynamically adjusts speed between 8 and 123mhz depending on processor demand. The official reason for this is to save battery life. The processor is called a "Handheld Engine" and was developed by Sony for their handheld line. It integrates video and audio acceleration into the CPU so that without throwing processor megahertz at applications it can still play 30fps video and music without a problem. | ||
| I know that a lot of specs on the UX50 state that it runs between 8 and 123mhz, but with the app Speedy, I've found that mine can run up to 155mhz. Plus, the UX50 test saved within Speedy is 152mhz. | ||
| The UX has an unusual memory configuration: 16 megs "regular" RAM 29 megs "internal media" RAM 16 megs "heap" RAM 16 megs "backup" RAM 8 megs "processor" RAM 19 megs taken up by preinstalled applications This makes for a grand total of 104 megs, but the available space for installing new applications or storing pictures/MP3s is just 44 megs. Backup RAM is only used to backup the applications you've installed on your UX, and it is designed to survive even the hardest of hard-resets. In other words, as long as you backup your UX on a regular basis, you'll never be stuck without your data. It should be noted that the "internal media" can be used just like regular RAM -- programs can be installed on the internal media and they will run just as if in regular RAM. To make sure the applications appear in your launcher, put them in the /Palm/Programs/AliasExt. These applications are protected even in the case of hard-reset, as is the "backup" RAM. |

So far it appears that this problem is fairly common in the UX community. Some of the screens do not whine at all, some whine very little, some whine a lot. A couple people have reported that the whine started very low and over a period of weeks got very loud. If your unit has a whining screen that is loud enough to be annoying you will need to contact Sony tech support and get your unit replaced. Just because your screen whines it does not mean that you should replace it, most units with the whine do not have any further problems and are not very loud. Some people have reported that Sony support knows about this problem and will replace the units and others have reported that Sony stated that they had never heard of this problem before. Regardless of what Sony states you are not insane and this problem is known by the UX40/UX50 community. The bad news at this time is that the only fix for this problem is to get your handheld repaired/replaced by Sony so you better hope you have a current warranty or an extended warranty by a third party. |
| This Message Thread on ClieSource.com Discusses this topic further. | ||
| Some users, including me, managed to reduce the whine by using a screen protector. It will fade to a more decent level, but will not disappear completly. | ||
| The Power Switch also acts as the backlight toggle so if you hold it down for more than a second or two it will toggle the backlight rather than turn the unit off. In order to turn the unit off just flick the power switch down rather than hold it down, that should fix the issue you are experiencing. | ||
| The top and bottom shell are painted magnesium alloy. The rest of the case components are made of plastic for the most part. The unit has an aluminum frame, which the tether cord (use it!) connects to. | ||

Not at this time. This is a dream of many UX40/UX50 users but a good solution has not been found. Due to the UX40/50 not charging through the USB sync port it would be a very interesting cable/case/device that you would attach to the UX to provide both power and sync. One of the points that users have made is that many UX40/50 users sync using Bluetooth or WiFi most of the time making the sync cable unnecessary except for data import duties. |
| There is a cable solution to sync AND charge. Check the Brando Store (http://shop.brando.com.hk/ipdaux50syncchargercradlekit.php) to get one. | ||
| Yes but the fix is at your own risk. People who have reported this problem have stated that by opening the display then grabbing the unit by either side and bending it slightly they can straighten out the frame and make the unit sit evenly. Once again, do this at your own risk. We aren't responsible if parts come flying out of your UX and you wonder what that burning electronics smell coming from your case is. | ||
| Each
user will have a different answer because each user does different
things with their UX. But in general the UX should stand up to about 4
hours of computing when the backlight is set to med-low. Using WiFi
drains the battery quickly, and the UX will only stand up to only about
2 hours of WiFi use. If the screen is turned off (using the "hold"
button) the UX can play about 10 hours of MP3s. To improve battery life, make sure your screen backlight is set as low as is comfortable. Turn off the Bluetooth, turn off the keyboard backlight, and turn off the infrared "beam recieve." |
At this time I am not aware of anyone who has overclocked or otherwise modified their UX50 to any large degree. You could be the first! Just let the rest of us know what you did and how successful it was :^). With the above statement being made there have been some cradle modifications made by individual users so they could use external power sources (battery packs, etc.) with their charging cradle. |
| The
screen is 320 high and 480 wide. This is not a typical screen for a
Palm OS handheld, and as a result many applications will not fill the
screen completely (except perhaps with the use of CodeDiver). Applications not designed to take advantage of the widescreen. But the applications will still work in their normal resolution of 160x160 or 320x320. The application will be either on the left or right, depending on where you've chosen to have your virtual graffitti area displayed. More and more applications are being made compatible for the UX widescreen, which is now shared by the Palm T|3. When shopping for applications (at places like PalmGear look for the "hi-res+" designation since this is most likely to be compatible. There is no current designation (that I know of) for the widescreen, but I suspect it will probably be something like "hi-res+w". |
| No. The only memory expansion interface the UX40/UX50 has is the Memory Stick slot built into the right hand side of the device. | ||
| First, perform a soft reset of your device. This is done by using a pen/stylus and poking it through the reset hole on the bottom of the UX. This will reboot the UX handheld and cause it to come back up, if this didn’t work move onto the next procedure. Second Procedure WARNING: From here out the procedures become destructive of data on your UX. I would hope you sync or us the built-in backup utility on a regular basis :^). Third Procedure Fourth Procedure (and the longest to perform) If none of the above procedures work I might suggest you contact Sony or post a message on the message forums to figure out what is happening. If you post a description in the forums please be as descriptive as possible. If one of the last two procedures worked but then when you restored your backup the UX started locking up again you might need to start fresh and rebuild your UX from the ground up with all your software. |
A hard reset gives you the ability to restore your UX to a factory software load and get around all but the most horrendous crashes. By following this procedure you will not lose your data in RAM unless you specify on reboot to erase all data from RAM. Normally you should stick to using soft resets rather than hard resets but if all else fails this is the way to get around almost all software created crashes. Perform a hard reset on your device: |

| No. The only way to charge the UX is to do it through the contacts on the bottom of the UX. You can buy splitters from companies such as Brando where the power from the USB port is diverted to the contacts on the cradle via an adapter but there is no way to charge or power the UX through USB alone. | ||
| Try http://shop.brando.com.hk/ipdaux50syncchargercradlekit.php | ||
| The
UX does have an included audio recording feature, perfect for voice
memos. Users have even reported that it can be used to record lectures
and meetings, despite the lack of an external-microphone jack. By all
accounts most people are quite happy with the abilities of the voice
recorder on the UX. The voice recorder has two settings: LP and SP. SP records roughly 1.5 minutes per megabyte, while the LP mode records about twice as long. The length of the recording is limited only by the amount of memory available, thus if you have a 256 megabyte card you should be able to record four and a half hours of audio without interruption (assuming the battery holds out). Recorded sounds up to 62k can be used as alarms with the UX, including as notification for meetings and other events, i.e. record your own voice to say "you have a meeting" and your UX will tell you pleasently (as pleasently as you care) that you have a meeting. No more annoying chimes! Finally, the UX voice recorder can be used without even opening the device. The UX has an external record button that is set to open the Camera application by default. It can be set to record voice memos instead simply by launching the voice record program, then choosing menu/options/capture button setting. It can then be set to launch the Camera, Movie Record, or Voice Recorder. |

| How do I overclock the UX50 | ||
| This may seem to be an idiotic suggestion, but it worked when my unit stopped charging recently. Use rubbing alcohol (just a tiny bit on a Q-tip) and clean the contacts. They may look clean and you can even try rubbing a bit of cloth (or whatnot) in there, but this did not work for me. I've had no problems for over two months now. However, a more severe form of lack of charging may indicate that the battery has "gone bad". In which case, you will need a battery (easy enough to get at laptopsforless.com, instructions here: http://www.cliebattery.com/up5530install.htm ) and a high quality (small) eye-glass screwdriver (*not* like the one pictured), for getting those #^$&^% five-point torqs screws out. If it is the battery, make sure you read the instructions carfully and pay attention because small parts come loose once you open the cover. Not a nightmare, but it can be a pain if you do not have a nice clear workspace when you start. | ||
| Ooops, slight loss of concentration there when I wrote that last paragraph ... you said you already changed it once ... You may have compressed the battery too much when installing it. It is fine if the sides (edges) compress some (in fact they must to make good contact) but if you press down on the face of the battery when squeezing in there, it makes some sort of internal contact. How this is arranged internally I do not know (because I have not opened one), but my wasted $24.95 + shipping can attest to the fact that this is true. Mine did exactly the same thing, the first time I changed the battery. Changed it again, paying attention to the softness of that battery wrapper ... and everything has been fine (contact problem notwithstanding). | ||

| In
order to sync over a WiFi connection you need to have an existing
802.11b network. This means that you must have a broadband connection
wired into a WiFi router (typically linksys or netgear, cost around $60
US). From that router you can have your PC hooked up wirelessly or
through a cable - that doesn't matter. First thing you will need to do is go to your network neighborhood in the control panel, right click on Lan or Wireless depending if you are connecting your computer directly into the line or if you are connecting wirelessly then go to properties, then click on advanced you will need to de-select the internet connection firewall. If you want to keep your firewall, you can find the service port in the firewall log that's located in the Windows folder on the PC. For my one Clie, the service port used is 14238. Next check your settings in the following applications for the following settings: In the HotSync app ------------------------------- Set Local/Modem to: Modem (above center main HotSync Icon) Below center main HotSync Icon: Set to Wireless LAN Modem Sync Preferences: Network LANSync Preferences: LANSync Primary PC Setup - Primary PC Name: !! Primary PC Setup - Primary PC Address: 192.168.1.100 ***(sample addy) Primary PC Setup - Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Network Preference Settings -------------------------------- Service: Wireless LAN Profile Name: Any name you want to give it. Network ID: any (the correct SSID can be set later) WEP Key: None (can be added later) ConnectMode: Infrastructure IP Address & DNS address: Auto checked on both. PowerSaveMode: Leave unchecked until you are up and working! ***The Primary PC address is found by right clicking the HotSync Manager Icon in the system tray. Select setup, Network, TCP/IP Settings. Click on the hotsync icon in your desktop's tray. Change the setting from "Cradle" to "Network." Then, under "Setup," and then "Network," authorize your ux50's name as an authorized sync-er. These settings should allow you to sync over the WiFi connection. This information was compiled from n2ifp and others at ClieSource. |
| Just to say that there is *no* need for you to have broadband. As long as you have a wi-fi network (they come in flavours other than routers!) you can sync using the instructions from justanoob | ||
| Unfortunately, the Palm Desktop software for Macintosh does not offer a way to do network HotSync at this time. | ||
Bluetooth is a wireless communication option built-in to the UX series, but to take advantage of it you must have a Bluetooth adapter for your PC or a Bluetooth enabled. Bluetooth adapters can be found on ebay for about $20. Once you have your adapter, you can sync your PC and your UX without need for a cable. The first thing you need to do is install your Bluetooth adapter and make sure that you have the latest driver for that adapter. Once the latest drivers are installed, and you''ve installed your Palm hotsync software, you need to configure it for your preferences. The next thing you need to do is make sure that your port settings are correct. To do this, right click on your "My Computer" icon and choose "properties". Then go to Hardware/Device Manager and look for a set on the list that pops up called "Ports (COM and LPT)". Expand that list so you can see all the configured devices. There should be a few there, some of which may or may not be Bluetooth. Take note of all the numbers that say COM and pick a number that does NOT conflict with any of the existing numbers (unless the number is just generically assigned to BT, then it's okay). All you're doing here is checking for conflict -- don't change anything. Just pick a number (in your head -- don't select it). Now close out of that. Next you need to set the port that your Bluetooth uses for serial connections. To do this go to My Computer/Control Panel/Bluetooth Configuration. That will pop up a tabbed interface, and you'll see a tab "client Services" that should have multiple bluetooth device options (i.e. fax, data transfer, serial connection, etc.). Choose Serial Connection from that list (single click) then hit the button "Add COM Port". Pick your number between 1-10 (mine's on 5) and then you're set on the BT side. Next you have to make sure the hotsync is using the same serial port as the Bluetooth. For this, go to Hot Sync application (from your tooltray) and make sure that you have your Hot Sync set to sync via Serial. Now go to Setup/Local and make sure that your COM Port is set the same there as it is in the BT Config menu. Finally, go to your Clie's hot sync application (on the PDA) and choose Local from the top button and from the drop-down underneath the Hot Sync icon "BT to PC." That should set you up with all that's needed to hotsync your UX with your PC wirelessly. |
| One addition to the last step. I had to select "Connection Setup" from the pull-down menu and create a "New" connection. To do this enter a name, Connect to "PC, Via "Bluetooth", "Tap to find" Device. Have it search for your PC. Viola! | ||
| Common sync problems include not having your port settings right, or not being configured for USB sync. Check all your settings under the hotsync icon in your tooltray. Make sure that you are set to sync via USB, and make sure that your port settings and user name are configured properly. Remember that in order to initiate a hot sync you must launch the hotsync program on the UX, then hit sync. Unlike PocketPCs the UX does not automatically sync when connected via USB. And unlike other Palms, there is no hardware button on the cradle to launch the hotsync application. | ||
| My UX-50 won't hotsync if I plug the cable in while it is turned on (although it will transfer files). | ||
| Copy the file(s) to your desktop and then doubleclick on them to insert them into your install tool. | ||
| Go to the file C:\Program Files\Sony Handheld\(User Name)\Backup and delete everything in this directory. Now, when you hotsync, you will only install what you have manually put in the install tool. | ||

| Yes. Select bluetooth in the palm desktop / sync setup. If your iMac supports bluetooth, is paired with your UX40/50 and both have bluetooth enabled it will work seamlessly after selecting sync with pc over bluetooth (maybe you need to create that connection first). | ||
| Yes. As a matter of fact I sync over an encrypted Wi-Fi link all the time using Cisco gear. This should apply to any WEP enabled network that is compatible with the UX. The one reason I could think of that you wouldn't be able to sync successfully is if you found an access-point that wasn't compatible with the UX at all (which happens to me occasionally). | ||

| The screen whine is a problem that is common on the UX40/UX50 handhelds. In some cases it is barely noticable and in other cases it will "stop meetings'. At this time the only solution for an overly noisey UX is to contact Sony and get it replaced. Refer to the hardware section of this FAQ for more information, which addresses this particular issue with the UX50. | ||
| Yes.
The screen is slightly smaller than other PDAs. It measures 3.25 inches
diagonally, compared to Pocket PCs that usually have 3.5 or 3.8 inch
screens. It's somewhat hard to compare the screen to other Palms though
becuase other Palms have square screens, not rectangular. Whether or not you can handle the slightly smaller screen size seems to be a matter of personal preference. Check the UX at your local store before committing. |
One work-around that has been identified for this problem is to use a chunk of tape to balance the screen out. Here is a short procedure on how to perform this operation: |
| This seems to be somewhat common. Many users have complained about a slightly tilted screen. I consider this a manufacturing error, and if it is bothersome enough I suggest returning it to the store where you purchased it or calling Sony for a replacement. | ||
Not all doors fall off easily. Luckily this is a minor component of the UX and as long as you are gentle it shouldn't be permanently broken if you accidently pull it out or have it ripped out by some freakish accident. You could probably make the plug that holds the door in slightly larger so it will not fall out but we have not heard of a success story along these lines. At this time we don't know of a part number for a replacement door but if you are still in warranty you could always try to call Sony and see if they will ship you out a new one if yours won't stay in. Or, they might just laugh at you. |

The edge cap beside the camera is held on with some sort of adhesive. Mine originally came off when I was pulling the UX50 out of a fairly tight bag that I keep my UX50 in while doing day to day stuff. I found that by pressing on the cap really hard it seemed to stick back on and has not been a problem since. If anyone knows any further information about this topic or has had this problem with a different resolution please tell us about it. |
| I had the same problem, though with mine the darn endcap broke off. The glue they use doesn't seem to work well. I used contact cement to put mine back on (being VERY carefull to not get any glue into moving parts) and it hasn't come off since. | ||
| The same thing happened to mine, but pressing it on did not hold it properly. I used a SMALL dab of construction adhesive (like Liquid Nails) and it has been a problem since. Do no use regulare glue or superglue, it will not hold to the plastic or metal. | ||
| To fix this problem, I bought a Super Glue ("Thick Gel" type, not the standard) from Target! That fixed my UX50! | ||

Personally I use Pricewatch or some other pricing engine to get the cheapest price as long as you aren't worried about the vendor. Dell or Amazon will also have sales on a regular basis where you can get memory cheaper than standard pricing. I would also suggest you shop your local vendors who have weekly ads (Bestbuy, CompUSA, Circuit City) to find out when they have good sales worth taking advantage of. If you have a better answer for this question or additions please post your answer! |

The standard warranty that comes with most personal organizers only covers manufacturer defects or device failures. It does not cover things such as drop damage or cracked screens, which happen to be some of the most common damage types that PDAs take. Replacing a cracked screen can cost hundreds of dollars and leave you without a PDA for weeks or months. The replacement plans that stores such as Bestbuy and CompUSA offer cover almost all types of failures that can occur with a PDA. They do not normally cover battery failure but other than that you can drop, throw, slam or otherwise abuse your PDA and still get it replaced on their plan. Considering that a two year replacement plan might cost $100 and save you weeks of not having your PDA and cover cracked screens I consider it worthwhile purchase, especially on a >$500USD PDA. |
| The replacment plans that you are talking about. I work at Best Buy and they do not cover cracked screens however they do cover battery failure. I dont know about the others. | ||
| I have purchased the protection plan 3 times now from CompUSA. Each time, the clerk has told me that it covers EVERYTHING. I go to return it each time, saying the exact same thing, and eventually, "corporate" approves it. | ||

On Memory Stick Types: Regular Memory sticks (purple color) are compatible for use with any OS devices from OS3.x to the latest OS5.2. These devices do not support the ATRAC3 music format. Regular MemoryStick (White Color) are similar to the regular purple MS but has "magicgate" supporting Sony's ATRAC3 music format. MemoryStick Pro is for OS devices with MS Pro support, aside from slight speed enhancement, storage volume can go up to a maximum of 1G but doesn't support Sony's ATRAC3 music format (Note: All MS Pro units above 256MB now support Magicgate). MemoryStick DUO is half the size of a regular MemoryStick. Note that just because a Memory Stick has Magicgate support does not mean you are forced to use it. If you purchase a memory stick that supports magicgate but do not use a magicgate enabled format (ATRAC3) to record to the memory stick the magicgate technology has no effect on your use of the media. | On MagicGate Technology/ATRAC Format: Magicgate is a "Digital Rights Management" system. If you buy a song in ATRAC format, it is encrypted and can only be played from the Magicgate Memory Stick where you downloaded it. You can't share it with friends, and can only play it on other devices by moving the entire memory stick, or "checking it in" to the same computer you purchased it on, which deletes it from the memory stick. Songs may be limited in all sorts of ways: The number of times they can be checked out/in; they can be set to expire after a number of days, or number of plays. There is no benefit to you as the user. The only benefit is to Sony Records. Theoretically I guess there could be a benefit to the recording artist as well, but since I'm one of the many people who find they buy more CDs now than they did before MP3s were around I don't buy that argument. Common agreement is to use the MP3 or Ogg Vorbis music formats and ignore ATRAC3 for recording/playing music on your UX series handheld. | Be informed that memory stick pro will not work with ATRAC for sonic stage because the software isnt up to date. Also for skip free video you will want the pro version. P.S. if you want to use the atrac3 format because the files are smaller only buy 128mg or smaller chips. Otherwise use mp3 on all types of memory stick media
I've compiled a table to help you compare the various Memory Sticks on offer. http://www.ottaky.com/sticks.php It should also help you decide which stick best meets your requirements. |
| ATRAC is a compression developed by sony. If you have purchased some sort of sony personal music player eg. NetMD, CD player etc. you have recieved a disc containing a software called 'sonicstage' with this you can compress your mp3's into ATRAC. Allowing you to whack more music on your memory sticks. | ||

| Try reseting the UX50. | ||
| maybe because it´s off, to turn it on press "ctrl + l" also to turn it off | ||
| I haven't tried this, but the easiest way that I can think of is to hard reset the device, choose "no" to restoring the back-up, then just immediately creating a new back-up of the currently empty UX (preferences/powersaving). This should replace the old back-up file with a new back-up file that has no information in it. | ||
| If you go into the advanced mode in the built-in powersave utility you can go into the menus and choose the option to erase the backup currently in the backup flash. | ||

| Absolutely. Feel free to write a good answer or question and post it to the FAQ! The FAQ uses HTML formatting in the text entry box so if you aren’t comfortable with HTML you will need a primer. Don’t worry, if you post an answer that looks terrible just retry and email saono-faq@artificiallives.com and let me know to delete your messed up answer. It takes almost everyone a couple times to get used to writing in HTML. If you don't want to learn HTML just send your FAQ answer to me in EMail and I'll edit it up and get it posted for you. Be sure to include the name who you want to show as the author of the answer. So, here is Alan’s Answer Primer on submitting answers to the FAQ: This is a paragraph. This answer was made by surrounding the paragraph with <p>This is a paragraph</p>. This tells the web browser to make the text it’s own paragraph. Notice that paragraphs in HTML have their own whitespace on either side. If you don't want something to be a full on paragraph but just want to make a list keep reading... What if you want to make a list but don’t want to make a full paragraph – you just want a new line? That is done with the <br> tag which adds a line break to your code (just like pressing enter in a text editor). Here is an example list made by adding <br> to the end of each line: 1. First the dog jumped over the cow.
The list above looks like this in “plain text”: Notice that I put a <br> at the end of each line in the list. In HTML you need to tell the browser where each new line begins otherwise it will run all your text together. I also put a <p> at the beginning and a </p> at the end of the list so that it would be seperated into it's own paragraph. If you are wondering how someone did something in HTML but don’t know how to do it yourself there is an option in your Web Browser “View” menu called either “Source” or “Page Source” depending on what browser you are using. You can use that option to view the HTML source for a document and see how someone did something. Note that viewing complex pages when you first start out is probably not the best way to get your confidence up :^). Once again, thanks for submitting a question or answer! It’s only with community participation that these things work. |

Definitive guide - UX to T610 to Internet I wanted to post something for the folks still having issues, can an admin please make this stick to the top of the forum? I have seen alot of guides, but nothing covers it all, so here goes If you have a UX and a T610/T616 and want to get to the internet read on... First off, both the phone and clie have to be configured or you will get nowhere fast. Second, there are 2 ways to get to the internet via your phone. 1. GSM - Basically you use your phone as a dialup modem to call your own isp, this uses your phones minutes on your voice plan, this is limited to 9.6k (Think old 9600 baud modem) 2. GPRS - This uses you phone to connect to the internet via your phone service provider's ISP (Tmobile, Cingular, etc...), this is not dialup per say, connection time is faster as there is no dialing, and speed can exceed 9.6k depending on signal strength, your provider, etc. You should be at least twice as fast as a GSM connection. TMobile claims 56k max for example. This also requires that you have some sort of data plan with your carrier (Tmobile unlimited internet, etc...) This does not use your voice plans minutes. Third, you do not need any external software to make this happen, the clie mobile connection wizard just helps you with settings, if you know the settings you dont need the software. Fourth, download the SonyEricsson BT T610 Driver here... Fifth, get the to devices paired together using the bluetooth on each device. Ok, So are we ready to go now? ---GSM Instructions--- UX next ---GPRS Instructions--- UX next Ok, you should be surfing now, or maybe crawling at these speeds? Again, I hope we can make this sticky and eliminate the confusion, TMobile doesn't seem to know how to make it work so we have to use these formus for help Every time I called TMobile for help I got a different set of directions that didnt work. |

| Thanks for this summary. In my case I can get internet access via GPRS but in following your instructions line 6 under 'UX next' I don't seem to have any option to input phone type other than 'Generic GSM Ph'. As I say, this has not stopped me getting access but it makes me wonder if I'm missing out on speed or functionality. How do you get to input other phone types? I am using a UK PEG-UX50 and a Sony Ericsson T630, setting everything up manually (not using the mobile connection wizard) | ||

| Don't mess with the 6310i driver from palm phonelink updater. With that driver bluetooth connection doesn't work properly (erase it from your UX50 as quick as possible :-)). Here is the way how to use the most 6310i driver for UX50. Go to Preferences -> Connection Hit OK then Ok again. Now try to send and recieve SMS! Regarding connection to the Internet this is my setup: Preferences -> Connection Preferences -> Network This setup works with 2 different network providers without any problem at all. |

| The following is based on the assumption that you have ADSL/broadband internet access: Recently in the UK, AOL have conceded to popular demand and stated that they will allow their users to have more than one device sharing the internet connection at any one time. The downside to this concession is that they will only allow a particular router to be used - something made by Thompson. If you were to purchase a router, you would then need to add a wireless access point (unless you could get a suitable wireless router/modem) which will set you back a further £30+. Once the access point is in place, you should be able to browse the internet wirelessly from your UX50. If you are on a dial-up network, you will have to investigate software proxy servers to run on your PC with the modem - have a look at AnalogX for a start although there are many more available. You will still need a wireless access point to allow your Clie to talk to your network and the internet however... | ||

| Hello everyone, Found this way back in Sep '03 when I was trying to connect my UX50 to a Nokia 3650 (and it worked)! The Nokia 6620 is basically the same guts, I think, so this worked for me. 1. Download and unzip phonelink from PalmOne HTML Code: http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/phonelink.html 2. Unzip phonelink and then click only on the Nokia3650.prc You do NOT need to get anything else. 3. Pair the devices, this is trivial. 4. Sync and upload Nokia3650.prc to phone. 5. Prefs, then connections 6. Create a new connection, name it whatever you like. SELECT phone in connect to: Via: Bluetooth Device: Tap to discover etc. Clie will say discovering bluetooth Show up as phone, under Model select Nokia 3650. THIS IS IMPORTANT AFTER THE PHONE IS SELECTED and the device shows up as whatever name you gave your phone, Change the selection back to PC. This will eliminate the model selection box. this is ok click on details speed should be 57, flow ctl : automatic click ok ok 6. Go to prefs and then network under service, select whatever name you gave your service under connections (I used VTG) Username: a Password: a Does not matter what these are, just fill them out. Connection: VTG 7. click on details Connection type: PPP Idle Timeout: 1 minute (or whatever you want) ensure Query DNS and IP address - automatic boxes are checked. 8. click on Script First line: select Send: and then type in at+cdgcont=,,"proxy"; Do NOT forget ; (if you are on public ip space, use public in place of proxy) the second line wil now change to End, click on it and change it to: 9. Second line: SendCR 10. Third line: Send: atd*99# 11. Fourth line: SendCR 12. Last line will be End, leave as is. 13. Ok, ok 14. Connect, should say initializing and viola, you are online, watch your fone, there should be a little G on the left of the bluetooth icon. Man, this has to be the single MOST annoying and obscure connection I've ever figured out. /vijay __________________________END Now I haven't run this through since getting the new phone, but it should work. Feel free to send me any questions. Good Luck! __________________ -Marc | ||

Most applications previously developed for the Palm platform were developed for resolutions of either 160x160 or 320x320 pixels. Today there are also 320x480 (HiRes+ Portrait - like most modern Clie handhelds) and 480x320 (HiRes+ Widescreen - like the UX series) resolutions but many applications has not been adapted for these resolutions yet. In order to work around this problem there are utilities such as CodeDiver to stretch compatible applications but it does not work in all cases. |
| Not at this time. Although this is one of the most commonly asked questions there is no option to rotate the screen at this time. We are hoping that Sony will add this feature in a flash update for the UX series of handhelds. | ||
| YES, now you can. Mobile-Stream made a utility for the UX-50 to switch to portrait-mode (http://www.mobile-stream.com/landscape_info.html) and the TH-55 to go to landscape. The portrait-version should be final soon. | ||
Some software is not fully supported by the UX50 display mode. Due to it being a fairly new resolution (480x320) many old programs (especially games or graphics intense programs) may cause display corruption. In some cases this might result in a soft reboot necessary to repair the corruption. If you are just looking to get a program to fit the screen or would like to muck with the settings to try to make a program reliable try out CodeDiver (explained elsewhere in this FAQ). |

| 5.2(1) is the shipping revision on the UX40/UX50. | ||

At this time Fonts4UX and CodeDiver are the two semi-necessary utilities available for the UX. You can live without either one but these two are commonly agreed upon as the two that you should budget for immediately after purchasing a UX. There are many other recommended utilities out there but most serve a specific function, these two focus on making your UX more usable as a whole. |

| There are many office-type suites available for the PalmOS but the primary ones discussed for the UX that support widescreen using CodeDiver are Documents To Go and QuickOffice. Here is a thread on ClieSource where they discuss the advantages/disadvantages of each suite. | ||
| Docs to Go now supports UX natively, without need for CodeDiver:) | ||
| Btw, Anonymous Coward was Abid:) | ||
| Quickoffice also now supports the UX-50 properly. | ||
| Agendus and DateBk5 are the most popular running around today. There are factions on each side stating why theirs is better. Agendus comes with an email client in the pro version and looks nicer by many people's opinions but DateBk5 has a strong following saying that it is more functional and is less expensive. Evaluate both and figure out which ones works for you. Note that as a Clie owner you can purchase Agendus Pro from Sony for 25% off at this time (current Dec 2003). | ||
| IMHO, versamail is the best mail program out there. It supports IMAP and SSL which is unmatched by other software. | ||
| SnapperMail now supports landscape screens. I wish it had the small font options of Versamail, but since I can't get a landscape-aware Versamail, Snapper is it for me. | ||

| Yes. The PalmOS has several calculators available. Right now the only one I've seen that supoprts Widescreen is Power48. This free software emulates a 48/49 series HP calculator and is available from the Power48 website. If you would like to see discussion about this calculator please see this thread on ClieSource. Keep in mind that free doesn't mean that the developer hasn't put lots of time into the software so if you use it a lot please donate to the cause. | ||

| You can just hotsync the mp3 files directly with Palm Desktop directly onto a memory stick. I also have a memory stick drive on my computer so I just add the files to the drive and done. | ||

Yes. Keeping RAM free has become a quest for some Palm users and therefore multiple ways of freeing RAM have been found. One method built into the UX is utilizing the AliasExt trick. Apparently when Sony customized the PalmOS for the UX they realized that a method of running software from someplace other than RAM was a good thing. Therefore if you put applications in the \Palm\Programs\AliasExt directory on Internal Media or Memory Stick then perform a soft reset an alias/shortcut will be created in the main RAM enabling you to utilize applications and some databases that normally only reside in RAM. Once these shortcuts are created your UX will sync the applications as if they exist in RAM. The major limitation known about this method is that if you have a database or application in your Internal Media or Memory Stick that you want to utilize you must have enough free RAM so that application or database can be copied to RAM when executed. To give an example if you load a complete map of your city into Internal Media that consumes ten megabytes you must have ten megabytes of RAM free when you launch the application utilizing the database otherwise the launch will fail. Here is a short procedure on utilizing the AliasExt Trick: |
| For programs that have necessary databases: 1. Create a directory for the program in the AliasExt Directory, i.e., for MobiPocket you could use: "\Palm\Programs\AliasExt\MobiPocket" 2. Place both the application PRC(s) and the application PDB(s) into the directory. 3. Soft-reset your UX-50 and the application should show up in your default launcher. To Move/Remove an Application from AliasExt: 1. Remove the Shortcut(s) from RAM: Use a program such as Filez and delete the file named "*ProgramName" (i.e. *MobiBook) whose creator is not a68k. The "a68k" file will be automatically removed upon soft-reset. 2. Move the PRC(s) and PDB(s) to where you want, and perform a soft-reset. *Make sure you delete or move the files before you do a soft-reset, because otherwise the shortcut(s) will be created again.* This answer was submitted by GetSource. |

| Yes. Get Fonts4UX. By common consensus the default fonts included with the UX40/50 are to thin and hard to read on the screen. Fonts4UX will enable you to change the default font to something easier to read. This software may cost you $8 but will save your eyes. | ||
| PS : Fonts4UX doesn't seem to work on japanese UX devices | ||
| Fonts4UX were discontinued. Try Fonts4OS5. get it here http://www.palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=software.showsoftware&prodID=52925 | ||

| Yes you can, AOL has AIM for Palm OS. If you use Yahoo, MSN and ICQ you can use VeriChat, it supports all those plus AIM. They work with any type of internet connection. | ||
| While you have to pay for the US version of AIM for Palm, you can download AIM for free from the AOL UK site at: http://www.aol.co.uk/aim/palm/. |
| No. Well, that's not entirely true. If you would like to sit within 12 inches of your device you would be able to remote control devices assuming you had the proper software. The problem is that the UX50 does not include a high power infrared transmitter that can be used to control home theatre systems, etc. so even if you found software compatible with the UX50 you would not be able to control anything from more than a foot or two away. | ||
Netfront is included with your UX series. A version of Web Pro (included with Palm handhelds) is also in circulation but you need to locate a modified version to run on the UX. Web Pro will run in widescreen with CodeDiver and Netfront supports widescreen natively. NetFront seems to do better direct web page rendering but Web Pro seems to be cleaner and faster when you let it run through the proxy server it is configured to use by default. Web Pro will utilize the default fonts on your UX after being modified by programs such as Fonts4UX enabling you to have an easier to read screen. There are people who complain of slowness either way so try both and see which one fits your browsing style and preferences better. One type of web page compatibility question very commonly asked is "How can I access my Exchange webmail at work?". Web Pro does function with an Exchange/Outlook Web Access server. If you are interested in running Web Pro I would suggest you refer to this ClieSource thread. |

There are a couple of ways to get to the advanced mode on the UX series handheld. The easiest way is to press Control-R (crtrl-r) while in the Power Save utility under prefs. Outlined below is a way to get to it without using the keyboard. 1. Go into the Prefs > Power Saving menu to get to the Power Saving mode where you can backup your UX. The advantages this mode offers is that you can backup the UX without turning it off and also see the number of recently modified databases before you backup the device. |

| Yes there are two 1)Avantgo (older but established) which has dedicated 'channels' that are preformatted and allows you to make your own from a web page 2)Plucker - this is newer and faster but you must make your own mobile web pages for it using the included tool. Just search google for either of these | ||

| CodeDiver is simple-as-pie to install and use, and is very stable software. First download the beta version of the software from the author. The beta is located at the bottom of the page. Let me say that again so you really get it -- DOWNLOAD THE BETA NOT THE CODEDIVER 1.02. The regular version of CodeDiver does not work on the UX. Next install the application as you normally would. Once installed, launch it. Each application that you want to try with CodeDiver needs to be added individually, i.e. if you want Avantgo to be widescreen, you have to hit "add" then choose Avantgo from the dropdown "appname" list. Then to make it widescreen you check the "virtual silk" button. This forces the virtual graffitto area to go away, and if possible fill the screen with a widescreen version of the application. The settings under virtual silk are usually "Set" or "Force" in the "size change" line, and "Long" in the startedsize and stopedsize lines. Once you've added the entry for the application, you can test your settings by hitting "applaunch". When testing an app, try out opening and closing the graffitti area, just to see what happens. If it doesn't work properly, try shifing some of the virtualsilk settings (i.e. "Set" to "Force" or the other way 'round). Not all applications will work with CodeDiver. Some will work a little, but won't be perfect. This is not the fault of CodeDiver. |
| One more thing -- to register CodeDiver ($10) you just go to Handango and register the regular version. You will then be able to download a registration file that will work with both the regular and the beta version, and future versions. | ||
Install CodeDiver Edit the properties of each of the above programs in CodeDiver: You will want to make sure that CodeDiver is turned On in the main CodeDiver screen. |
| the latest version of Quickoffice from cutting edge support the wide screen format natively. | ||
Install CodeDiver Add SS_P2P to CodeDiver Add WP_P2P to CodeDiver Add Documents to CodeDiver Add WordToGo to CodeDiver Add any other program from the Docs to Go Suite (SmartChart, SlideShowToGo, etc..) Set all the programs to the following settings for silkscreen |

| All skyscape medical software for Palm works flawlessly. I had a Clie T615C before and I have purchased all skyscape software for Palm. When I switched to UX-50 a year ago. I was mad about the UX not allowing me to make it widescreen. I had to foece myself to get used to it because the T615 was too slow to load medical reference software. Now, it is proven that UX is a keeper and Palm OS is a charm. | ||
